Are robots contributing to unemployment? The U.S. construction industry doesn’t think so
OFweekrobotNetnews BI Chinese station reported on June 29 that since Changsi, automationIt has long been considered a harbinger of future high unemployment. At the same time, some industry experts have also predicted that the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) software and intelligent Robots could lead to the loss of millions of workers.
In the construction industry, however, this may not be the case.
In fact, with the increasing labor shortage in the construction industry, the industry is therefore particularly suitable for the entry of robots.
According to a report earlier this year by modern management consultancy McKinsey & Company, productivity levels across the construction industry have not improved substantially since 1945, leaving today’s construction industry facing a massive labor shortage. The McKinsey & Company report also shows that about 98 percent of large construction projects end up over budget, and the construction industry has been struggling to innovate with technology when it comes to labor.
In addition, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also shows that as of February 2017, the entire U.S. construction industry alone faced a labor shortage of about 200,000 workers.
Overall, this lingering legacy of inefficient labor poses a greater threat to the modern construction industry, which may be addressed by the use of automated systems or robots.
New jobs and a better life
Numerous AI-based systems that can help alleviate labor vacancies in the construction industry are currently under development, including “mobile construction workers” and mobile3D printingMachines, etc., both automated tools are able to adapt to their respective environments, thus adapting to the various work environments in the construction industry. These AI building systems tend to be able to perform their tasks more efficiently and quickly than natural humans, so in this sense, the construction industry seems well suited to the introduction of automation.
However, there are also critics who say that this kind of intelligent automation should be treated with caution, which in their view could replace natural humans. While it’s true that automated systems could lead to some job losses, it could also lead to the creation of new jobs that we haven’t really needed before, such as those servicing these automated systems.
In addition, some believe that automation, combined with some universal basic income (UBI), may help more people to pursue other more meaningful things, such as content creation. This combination will also give people time to do more learning and tackle bigger problems, so we should consider all possible outcomes before criticizing automation as a negative.
