ams Osram launches 110µm small-aperture surface-mount EEL to enhance industrial automation applications

  • The SPL S1L90H_3 laser has a narrow emission width, which can improve the performance of long-distance lidar applications and simplify optical integration;
  • SPL S1L90H_3 has a higher peak power and average power output rating, which is different from other small surface mount laser products on the market;
  • Optimized for short-pulse lidar applications such as drones, robotics, and construction and factory automation equipment.

Shanghai, China, March 23, 2023 – ams Osram (SIX: AMS), a world-leading supplier of optical solutions, today announced the launch of a small-aperture, compact surface-mount laser SPL S1L90H_3 , adding new products to the edge-emitting laser diode (EEL) product portfolio. The laser delivers improved performance in LiDAR and long-range Industrial ranging applications and simplifies optical integration.

The SPL S1L90H_3 is the first surface-mount edge-emitting laser with an aperture as low as 110µm. The small aperture enables applications to generate narrow beams. The 905nm infrared technology is optimized for short-pulse LiDAR applications.

The single-channel SPL S1L90H_3 uses ams Osram’s multi-junction technology and consists of three vertically stacked emitters mounted on a single laser die within the device’s 2.3mm x 2.0mm x 0.69mm package, enabling the laser to generate 65W peak output power.

These features make this product better for illuminating target areas at long distances in ranging, 3D optical sensing, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) applications, such as drones, robots, and building and factory automation important role in the equipment.

Jouni Riihimaeki, product marketing manager for industrial lasers at Osram ams, said: “Consumer and industrial products produced in high volume require a laser in a small surface-mount package that can be assembled by automated production equipment. The SPL S1L90H_3 is just such a laser. Low-power surface-mount devices with half the aperture for the industrial market further enrich our product portfolio.”

More optimized package design

The optimized energy-saving pulsed laser SPL S1L90H_3 can achieve a maximum pulse width of 50ns. The beam divergence is only 10° (parallel) x 25° (perpendicular), utilizing its small aperture for effective beam shaping.

The inductance-optimized package of the SPL S1L90H_3 is suitable for pulses less than 2ns. The rugged surface mount package is ideal for use in industrial environments, consumer applications, and home and building automation.The product has Class 3B corrosion resistance and low thermal resistance, which is convenient for system thermal design
